Devon's U18 Boys squad have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Royal London U18s County Cup after beating reigning champions Wales by 19 runs on Sunday.

The result means that Devon are the only National County left in the competition this year. The side will now face Somerset away on August 6.

The victory on Sunday follows earlier round victories against Cornwall (by 8 wickets) and Gloucestershire (by 81 runs), with Devon set to face either Essex or Middlesex should they progress to the semi-final.

Under 18 Boys coach, David Joseph, was full of praise for the way the team played:

"It was a really professional performance. Our batting was based around partnerships and players then going on to make big scores and then in the final overs really accelerated to give ourselves a really good total.

"In the bowling and the fielding, everyone did their jobs. We bowled in really good areas and the fielding was outstanding. I think it was a total team performance."

Harry Southgate scored 108 runs as Devon progressed to the quarter finals.

"A magnificent innings from Harry Southgate set the game up for us," said captain, Jack Whittaker. "We were slightly unfortunate that the pitch flattened out a little bit for Wales' second innings but, testament to the bowlers, they kept it tight pretty early on. Even when they put a partnership together, we managed to constrain them enough. Eventually, when they came hard at the end, the bowlers did their jobs extremely well and caught them."

Looking ahead to the quarter-finals, Jack says: "We shouldn't really fear anyone really and it'll be good to play a local rival in Somerset."
