Under 12s Development at Culmstock CC

On one of the hottest days of the year, the Under 12 Development Squad travelled to Culmstock to host Cricket Wales East in a 35 over game. The team had had a mixed season so far with a good win over Dorset, an evenly matched game with Cornwall and a challenging game against Somerset.

Supprted by Jamie from Culmsotck CC the team did a gentle warm up before Alex Toghill met the Wales captain in the middle for the toss. Winning the toss, Devon elected to bat. Going to the crease, Conner Trott at hos home ground and Leo Raichura got off to a great start. Batting through to the first drinks break, they had put on a partnership of 65.

It must have been something that they put in the squash as returning to the crease after drinks, Devon lost the wickets of Leo Conner and leo very quickly. Mood in camp was a little nervy as Alex Roper and Noah Turner went out to bat. Batting well, they took advantage of the extras and watched for the balls they could score off and together made a partnership of 33 before Noah lost his wicket to the spinner. Despite only scoring 8, he helped to steady the shi[p and build the partnership to allow the next batters to come in and play with a bit of freedom. Scoring a run a ball, Alex Toghill, Jonny Handley and Albery Courtice conyributed to a good score of 209/5.

Batting plans

Feeling hot, but confident, Devon took to the field. They had watched the fielding of Cricket wales and learnt from it, so chose their positions well! Conceding very few runs of the first overs, the pressure quickly built. A great second over from Luke Schneeberger saw Wales lose two wickets in consecutive balls! A great start for Devon. Despite scoring steadily, Wales East also lost regular wickets.

Celebrating a wicket

Everyone on the team fielded at their best, quickly down onto the singles and stopping the boundaries. In fact Devon only conceded 9 boundaries in the whole innings, which was impressive considering the slope and the fast outfield. With wickets all shared around, Wales never looked to reach the target and were bowled out for 125, Devon winning by 84 runs.

Many thanks to Culmstock CC for their excellent hospitality - especially the lollies at the end! Also thanks to the support of the parents, especially Mr Courtice and Mr Legodi for umpiring in the heat.

All in all a great day for the team!
