STOKE Gabriel’s hopes of lifting the Corinthian Cup for the first time were dashed when they bowed out at the semi-final stage by 63 runs to Tavistock 2nd XI.

It was Stoke’s sixth appearance at finals day, this year played out at Ivybridge CC, and just like the others it ended in disappointment with a semi-final exit.

Tavistock, whose skipper Charlie Barriball won the toss and chose to bat, made 193 for three in their 20 overs.

Left-hander Jack Smyly went cheaply to Stoke spinner Dan Bullock – and Dom Snyman followed soon afterwards as Tavvy stalled on 31 for two.

Surviving opener Rhys Davies, a former MCC Young Cricketer attached to the Lord’s training scheme, upped the tempo with 55 as Tavistock raced along to 94 for three.

Getting Davies out did nothing to slow the pace as the Barriball brothers – Billy (66no) and Charlie (43no) – flogged Stoke all around the ground and out of it at times during an unbroken stand of 94 that occupied the last six overs.

Stoke skipper Jack Tolley went for 20 in one over – all to Billy Barriball – and Jake Robinson’s final over added up to 21 when a couple of wides were added in.

Charlie Barriball, who hoisted the last ball of the innings for six, only faced 17 deliveries for his 43 not out.

Stoke made the worst possible start to the chase by losing opener Isaac Mapima in the first over and the situation deteriorated as they slumped to 26 for five as Snyman (2-15) and Tim Swanepoel (3-15) got into the top order.

Bullock (14) and Isaac Withington (17) staged a fightback of sorts, but the chase was well behind the asking rate by then and the game already decided.

Chris Harrison (35no) and Kyle Lardner (31) put on exactly 60 for the eighth wicket as Stoke meandered to 130 for eight at the close.

Uplyme & Lyme Regis (184-4) overcame Sandford 2nd XI (116-8) by 68 runs in the other semi-final.

Tavistock (140-7) went on to defeat Uplyme & Lyme Regis (139-9) by three wickets in the final.

Stoke Gabriel spinner Dan Bullock bowling during the semi-final defeat by Tavistock. His four overs only cost 24 runs... well bowled!
